Sweeney Todd & Shakespeare In Love

On Saturday night I took a chance on getting tickets for Sweeney Todd at Théâtre du Chatelet

It totally paid off - I got brilliant seats, three rows from the front, for only €20!

A big stage musical. The main cast was British, and the rest were French.

Cool split stage.

Love this shot. Great colour and angles.

This was a cool way of showing what Sweeney was writing in a letter. The people on top spoke out the letter line by line (from right to left) until finally the last person on the left was the one who actually received the letter.

Fantastic performances by the leads. Ms Lovett was particularly impressive. From the very moment she appeared on stage we loved her.

Big, fun performances.

Blood!

This song - 'Johanna (Reprise)' - was my favourite. Really beautiful singing, with a happy light beat rhythm underneath, a love song, and yet we see Sweeney cutting the throats of various men, with bright red blood splurting into the air, and bodies thumping to the floor below. I burst out laughing. It was horrifically fantastic.

A very good show. I'm always a bit disappointed now when I see musicals for some reason. I think it's because I've got over the spectacle of it (although I still love that) and then often there's not much more to chew on. But the singing was incredible. And the music is fantastic. It's a great story. And overall, for €20, this is a treat!!!

On Sunday night I watched Shakespeare In Love, which a lot of people have been quoting lately ("What is the play and what is my part?"), but I'd never seen it.

I really liked it. Wonderful writing. Theatrical performances. Simple and beautiful.
