Day Thirteen - Research Project Proposal and Amélie

This morning I went down the road to do my laundry. This time I didn't wash at 90 degrees so the size of my clothes stayed relatively the same! Whilst I waited for the wash to finish and went for a stroll down by Chateau Rouge metro. There were these markets going on just round the corner which I thought were pretty interesting!

Hooves, anyone?

Great colour, eh Dad?

Les Poissons...

Designer belts...

Great deals on veges.

Then came home to work on my Research Proposal Abstract. This is where I'm at at the moment:

Research Project 2009

Proposal

Philippe Gaulier and Acting With Pleasure

Phillipe Gaulier's theory and teaching of 'actor's pleasure' is the subject of this research report. The central question of this report is 'What is Philippe Gaulier's theory of actor's pleasure, how does he teach pleasure to actors, and what are the effects of an actor having pleasure in performance on both the actor himself and the audience?' Proposed investigation of this subject will include reading of literature by Philippe Gaulier; reading of literature about Philippe Gaulier's teaching; reading of literature about Philippe Gaulier's background (e.g. his education, teachers, and performance history); and reading of literature about previous students of Philippe Gaulier as well as observations of their work. Proposed investigation will also include interviews with past and present students of Philippe Gaulier; interviews with Philippe Gaulier himself; and notes from my own experience (a third year acting student at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School) attending a 'Character Workshop' at Ecole Philippe Gaulier.

Plan for Proposed Investigation Leading up to Report Deadline (22nd May):

Monday 2nd Feb - Start 'Character Workshop' at Ecole Philippe Gaulier
Friday 6th Feb - Start reading 'The Tormentor' by Philippe Gaulier
Friday 27th Feb - Finish 'Character Workshop'
8th March - Return to New Zealand; Begin reading literature by Philippe Gaulier
19th March - Begin reading literature about Philippe Gaulier's teaching and background
23rd March - Return to full time classes at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School
30th March - Begin research of previous students of Philippe Gaulier including interviews
6th April - Begin preparing Research Conference Presentation
4th/5th/6th May - Research Conference Presentations
8th May - Begin collating information gathered from research and start writing report.
22nd May - Report Due 5pm

For me, 'pleasure' has been the key to everything Philippe has been teaching so far - everything comes back to the actor's pleasure - so (for now) it seems clear that I should base my research around pleasure.

At 6.30pm I met Ingeborg at my local metro and we got a hamburger (which wasn't fully cooked...) from a restaurant up the road then went to my place to watch Amélie!

I hadn't seen this film before and had been meaning to watch it for a while because I knew it was filmed around Montmarte where I am living. I was pleasantly surprised to recognise lots of locations that I walk past everyday! So that was exciting. The film is beautifully shot, has a cute and wacky storyline, and a bunch of great characters. A real feel-good experience.

Ingeborg and I were chatting and she's changed my perspective on Oliver, my roommate. She said she can understand that the way he is may be because he happened to hang out with a group of guys that put value on being 'cool', not talking much or showing any emotion, and not caring (or not appearing to care) about others. He's really not that bad. He's a slob and he has an uncaring demeanour about him, but this is because he is young and he is sensitive. Ingeborg worked at a prison in Norway before she came to Paris, where she was surrounded by murderers everyday. However she chose not to look at people's files, instead opting to meet the prisoners as human beings and try and keep the relationship in that way. She is very understanding and trustworthy, which is wonderfully refreshing. It is amazing how much there is to learn from people all around you.
